Lowes Island, Cascades Community and Countryside Proprietary are some of the larger more established developments that have come to symbolize Sterling. Sterling's Dulles Town Center Mall, the Countryside commercial area with Regal Cinemas and many shops and restaurants and the Cascades commercial area featuring Target, Costco ,etc. have brought large scale big-box retailers to the Eastern side of Loudoun County. Two higher education institutions are based in Sterling - the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (known locally as NoVa) and Marymount College.
On the greener side of life, the Algonkian Regional Park borders the Potomac river throughout much of Sterling, providing a public golf course, wonderful leafy park, children's playground, picnic areas and the public Downpour Water Park with entertaining slides and water fountains that will delight all ages. The park also features a boating ramp entrance to the Potomac.
Loudoun County purchased Claude Moore Park in 1990. The National Wildlife Federation owned the property from 1975 to 1986, managing it as a wildlife education facility. However, the history of this parcel goes back a bit further. The last known undeveloped section of Vestal’s Gap Road runs across the Park. This trail, first used by Native Americans, was a major route for settlers between Alexandria and the Shenandoah Valley. George Washington used the road frequently in his travels between Mount Vernon and the western frontier. General Braddock’s troops, including Daniel Boone, traveled Vestal’s Gap Road during the French and Indian War. There is still a Civil War signals tower on the property.
The park consistes of two major areas. The Sportsplex, whichincludes four lighted baseball fields and three lighted softball fields as well as a lighted football field and unlighted practice field.
The Nature Area includes the remainder of the park, which does somewhat surround the Sportsplex. The nature area includes 11 total miles of hiking trails including the blue-blazed Scout Trail, the parks longest trail at 3.5 miles; this trail is dedicated to the Girl and Boy Scouts in recognition of the many service projects those groups have completed to enhance the park. See Trail Map here:

The park also offers two fishing ponds; large-mouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill are the primary fish species. Programs, concerts and more are offered at the park year-round.
